Sixt signs agreement with Wataniya Airways

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Car hire firm Sixt and Kuwait’s Wataniya Airways have signed a deal which will mean greater rewards for frequent flyers who rent vehicles through Sixt at various Wataniya destinations. Members of the airline’s Diwan programme will now earn between 500 and 1,000 miles every time the rent a Sixt vehicle.

Loyalty marketing manager for Wataniya Airways, Hisham Seifeddine, said that as well as getting additional points, passengers can get discounts across a range of Sixt rental vehicles. Those who have signed up to the Purple and Silver loyalty programmes will get a 10 per cent discount, and Gold members will be rewarded with a 15 per cent off the price of their chosen hire car.

Members of Wataniya Diwan Gold will also have the option of upgrading their vehicles when renting through Sixt. Wataniya’s chief commercial officer, Lee Shave, said the airline was constantly committed to finding innovative ways of giving its passengers an improved service. He added that by partnering with Sixt, the carrier could now offer loyalty club members the chance to hire discounted rental vehicles and the opportunity of earning extra rewards when they do so.

Shave went on to say that the agreement covered a number of destinations including Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Bahrain, Italy and Austria.

Other benefits of becoming a member of the Wataniya Diwan loyalty programme include priority check in at the airline’s first class counters. Those wishing to sign up can do so, quickly and easily, at the Wataniya website.

Sixt offers penalty free car hire cancellations ahead of BAA strike

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

One of Europe’s most popular car hire firms has decided to offer its customers the chance to cancel their rental reservations free of charge if they find themselves affected by a possible strike by airport workers. Unite, the airport workers’ union, last week said that members would be rejecting a 1 per cent pay rise offered by BAA.

If a strike goes ahead, potentially as early as next week, Sixt customers at Heathrow, Stansted, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen could find themselves no longer requiring a rental vehicle. Sixt said it realised that a strike by airport workers was totally out of the control of its customers.

Sixt therefore wants to offer the security of being able to book a vehicle in the knowledge that the booking can be cancelled at any time if that customer is affected by industrial action.

The news that a strike may go ahead will be a further blow to travellers who have already experienced a year of disruption. First there was the travel chaos caused by some of the worst winter weather in decades. Then came the ash cloud over Europe which cost airlines and estimated £1.2 billion; and then there was 22 days worth of disruption because of strikes by British Airways’ cabin crew.

The ballot not to accept BAA’s offer was won by a 3 to 1 margin and Unite is now urging members to strike. If a walkout goes ahead it would mean that many essential airport workers would not be at their posts including security guards and fire fighters.

Avis faces tough battle with Hertz for Dollar Thrifty

Monday, May 31st, 2010

As analysts wait to see what the next move will be in the battle for Dollar Thrifty, many think that it is highly unlikely that another bidder will put cash on the table. Currently, Hertz has made its offer for the group and is waiting to see if Avis can come up with something better.

There is the slim possibility that Enterprise might step in, but with its already dominant share of the rental market, it is unlikely that it would gain anti-trust approval for such a move. Neil Abrams of Abrams Consulting Group said that another unlikely scenario would be for one of the larger European companies, such as Sixt or Europcar, to step in with a bid.

Abrams added that he did not think anyone wanted to get into a bidding war with Avis and Hertz at the moment. He went on to say that they were likely to be the only two at the party unless there was a dramatic change of circumstances.

Hertz has already offered $940 million for Dollar Thrifty, and is viewed by many as the frontrunner in the race. Fund manager of Touchstone Mid Cap Value Fund, Peter Zuger, thinks that Hertz has done the clever thing by going in with a low bid and waiting to see what Avis can do. Hertz will then have to opportunity to reassess the situation and put in a higher counter offer.

It is believed that where Hertz is offering 80 per cent cash and 20 per cent stock for Dollar Thrifty, Avis may make a predominantly stock offer. This could cause problems as the value of Avis stock has dropped by 27 per cent since it announced its intentions of putting in a bid for Dollar Thrifty.

Sixt Trade launched as vehicle hire solution for SMEs

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Car hire firm Sixt has launched a new product, which aims to give small and medium-sized business enterprises in the London area, the advantages of a corporate account, without the paperwork. At the beginning of the month, Sixt Trade was launched to allow a growing number of businesses access to vehicles, without the hassle of actually opening an account.

Sixt’s commercial director, Per Voegerl, said that Sixt Trade would allow SME businesses access to the best rates Sixt had to offer, as well as an improved online booking service, the option of having vehicles delivered and collected, and the chance to earn rewards, such as free rental days.

Voegerl added that the product had been specifically tailored to those businesses which needed easy access to a reliable rental service, but did not want to get embroiled in contracts and paperwork. The service even offers customers the ability to pay for their vehicle hire on a credit card belonging to a third party.

Businesses which use the new Sixt Trade service will be able to earn rewards on their Sixt Trade loyalty card. One of the main perks being offered is the chance to earn a free day’s vehicle rental for every nine days of paid rental. Sixt said that this will help many small and medium sized businesses make significant savings on their annual rental bills.

Sixt Trade is being offered to customers at all 16 of the firm’s London based branches. Companies are able to book vehicles on the Sixt website at any time of the day or night.

Sixt causes a stir with new ad campaign featuring French President

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Car hire company, Sixt, has caused a sensation in France by producing an advertising campaign which deliberately mocks the height of the country’s President, Nicholas Sarkozy. The posters are designed to persuade the rental firm’s customers to rent a Citroen C3 hatchback, which is a small car, by saying that people should follow the example of Mr Sarkozy’s wife, Madame Bruni, and get their hands on a small French model.

If Sixt finds itself in hot water over using the couple’s image in its new campaign, it will not be the first company to have done so. In 2009, budget airline Ryanair was sued for using an image of the diminutive Sarkozy and his 5ft 10in wife, with a caption suggesting that if Carla Bruni used the airline, she would be able to have her whole family join her for her wedding. Ryanair was ordered to pay £50,000.

Pardon, the French clothing firm, was also sued for using a nude image of France’s first lady on a bag, with a slogan suggesting that Mr Sarkozy really should have bought some Pardon clothes for her.

The height difference between the former Italian supermodel and her husband is a constant source of amusement for the press. She is often featured wearing shoes with flat soles when appearing next to her husband, whereas he tends to favour shoes with a bit of lift in them.

President of Sixt, France, Jean-Philippe Doyen, shrugged off the controversial aspect of the new ads by saying that they were simply meant as a bit of fun. He said that the car rental business needed a bit of humour injected into it after its recent difficulties.

End of January sale announced by Sixt Rent A Car

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Last year the car hire world was rocked by the consequences of the global economic downturn. In countries like Spain and Portugal the lack of funds being made available to rental firms to replace the vehicles in their fleets meant that the price of car hire sky rocketed. This year will be a year of recovery for many firms and this weekend Sixt Rent A Car is launching its end of January sale for those who want to get away for a bit of summer sun. Sixt say that those booking a car hire through their website this weekend will be able to get as much as twenty percent off the price of a hired vehicle. This means that top quality cars will be available for as little as £20.00 per day. Sixt offers the highest quality vehicles including new models from BMW and Mercedes.

The end of January sale starts at 6.00pm this evening and will run through to midnight on Sunday. Johannes Boeinghoff, managing director of Sixt Spain, says that although it looks like the pressure on car hire firms in Spain will ease off this year there is still the possibility that those who do not book as early as possible may run into problems finding car hire at the best possible price. He therefore urges Sixt customers to work out their travel plans well in advance an book a car hire as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Sixt Rent A Car has offices at all the major tourism spots throughout Spain.

Sixt offers advice on all aspects of car rental through independent blog page

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Sixt Rent A Car says that a blog it set up to provide anyone who logs on with news and stories from around the world has been extremely successful. The Sixt blog was set up to serve customers of Sixt as well as non-customers who wish to contact an expert in order to gain information on car rental as well as what is going on in the car rental world. The site features blog posts from regular guests which cover subjects from world news to local events.

Internet marketing executive for Sixt, David Jackson said the blog site was not simply dedicated to publishing information about car hire. He wants the site to appeal to a broad range of internet customers and hopes that its diversity will appeal not only to regular Sixt customers but also to new customers.

Whether a Sixt customer or not, the site is already becoming an extremely useful tool for those wishing to find out about travel conditions in certain areas as well as any problems that they might encounter on their journeys. Sixt say that they were keen for the blog site to be separate from the Sixt reservations pages so that it didn’t simply feel like a sales tool. One of the most popular functions of the site is an area called Ask The Expert where anyone can get advice on even the most complicated problems associated with car rental such as what tyre type and pressure should one use when on a skiing holiday.
