Delta to cut services to Manchester

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Delta Air Lines has confirmed that it will discontinue its daily service between Manchester and New York, which has been operating for more than three years now.

A spokesperson for the airline has said that the decision was made to cut the services to protect the airlines profitability in the long term and to focus on matching capacity with demand, confirming the route would not continue the service from January 8 next year.

The Delta Airline spokesperson did say that the airline will maintain their year round Manchester to Atlanta service, which will allow for passengers travelling to or from New York to transfer in Atlanta.  The spokesperson said that demand would continue to be monitored before considering reinstating the route.

Manchester Airport however has said the decision by Delta Air Lines only covered the winter season, but felt the route would be back up by summer.   A spokeswoman for the airport said that the two parties were still in talks over the matter.

Delta Air Lines is the second airline to cut services from Manchester in the past two weeks.

400 Jet Airways pilots call in sick

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Thousands of passengers were affected on Tuesday when nearly 400 pilots working for Indian airline Jet Airways called in sick to protest the firing of two colleagues, the airline said.

Spokesman for the airline A K Sivanandan said that over 100 of Tuesday’s 346 international and domestic flights were cancelled, including flights to New York, London and Brussels.

A statement from the airline said that the pilots’ strike action is illegal and it was not clear at present how long the strike would last.

Sivanandan had said two senior pilots were sacked for working against the company’s interests but did not disclose the nature of the dismissal.

Almost 400 pilots are demanding that Jet Airways management immediately re-hire the fired pilots.

Jet Airways has offered a full refund to passengers whose flights were affected by the strike action.

British Airways introduce A318s

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

British Airways has launched the first of two unique Airbus A318s into its fleet that will be used to operate a new business class-only service from London City airport to New York.

The aircraft has been redesigned by airbus to allow it to take off and land at steeper gradients than usual, such as required by London City Airport.

The new Airbus A318s can carry up to 32 passengers, which feature seats that convert to fully flat beds, internet and email access as well as the option of sending text messages.

Airbus claim the A318 has the best range and capability of all aircraft serving city centre airports.

British airways chief executive said the A318s had been specially ordered for the twice-daily London City to JFK service because of their size, flexibility and steep gradient capability, and will reinforce their unrivalled schedule between two of the world’s greatest financial centres.

He added that although the A318 may be the airline’s smallest aircraft, but it will play a big role in bringing a new dimension of style and convenience to the London to New York route, as well as show their determination to invest in the future of London City.

Passengers who choose to fly to New York from London City have the option of clearing US Customs checks when the plane stops to refuel at Shannon in Ireland.

Hertz to upgrade technology to improve customer relations

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Hertz, one of the world’s largest car hire companies, plans to introduce new high-resolution cameras that can take pictures before and after a car is hired.

The company has been testing new technology at a secret location in the US which can record close up images from multiple angles which can show every scratch and dent on the surface of a car.

The new technology is intended to improve customer relations and reduce losses due to damage, and comes at a pivotal time for the car hire industry which has been struggling due to the effects of the recession, but is now seeing signs of recovery.

Hertz spokesman, Richard Broome, said the company hopes the new high resolution digital inspections would help reduce annual damage payments of £102 million.

The long standing procedure for inspecting vehicles includes a walk around with the customer and a company representative to visually inspect the damage.   The new system will mean the close up photos will show any damage that the customer may be responsible for.

“It will speed up the rental process and help to avoid any disputes over damage. Sometimes we may get into disputes with consumers that don’t get resolved” Mr Broome said.

The plan to introduce the new technology is part of a wider plan by Hertz to expand its market base by appealing to new customers.  On Monday, Hertz revealed it had purchased Automoti Group, a website that allows car hunters to rent the vehicle before buying it.  Hertz has also introduced a per-hour car hire scheme in London, Paris and New York.

The car rental business has been struggling for the past 18 months as competition has forced prices to crash, along with the credit crisis which has meant car hire chains have faced extra difficulties when gaining credit to upgrade their fleets.

Hertz recorded a profit in the second quarter of this year, citing rising costs as the reason to their rebound.

Singer to sue American Airlines for racist comments, stabbing

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

A Brazilian singer has begun a lawsuit against American Airlines flight attendants who allegedly made racist remarks at him and stabbed his producer with a pen on a flight from New York to his home country.

His wife, Dudu Nobre filed the lawsuit against the airline last week seeking more than $4 million in compensation.

Nobre claims that one flight attendant repeatedly called him a ‘monkey in Portuguese and continuously made ‘monkey-like’; sounds during the flight last year.

The singer also claimed in the lawsuit that he was threatened by the flight attendant, and that his producer was stabbed with a pen whilst disembarking the aircraft.

American Airlines did not comment on the matter.

19,000 people fall for Central Park airport spoof

Friday, July 24th, 2009

It all started as a joke put forth by a fictitious company located on a non-existent floor of the Woolworth building in New York City. The company launched an elaborate website explaining a plan to build an airport on the site of one of New York City’s most popular landmarks, Central Park.

Now the spoof has caught momentum and people all over the city are talking about it and wondering whether or not there’s any truth to it. Anyone familiar with Central Park would find the idea preposterous. The largest tract of land in NYC is revered by young and old alike as a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The park contains a zoo, a rowing pond, a pond where model boats can be sailed, horse paths, bike paths, the famous Tavern On The Green and more. It also provides a view for the most expensive apartments and condominiums in NYC which surround it. A lot of powerful and important people live in the buildings surrounding the park.

So the likelihood of an airport ever being constructed there is really impossible. Nevertheless, the plan has been covered by some of the more gullible press and a petition is available on the internet for those who would like to weigh in on the plan. So far it’s reported that more than 19,000 people have expressed their support for the plan by signing the online petition.
