New research reveals lack of information given by car hire companies

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Those deciding to rent a car for their holidays have been advised to read and understand the terms and conditions outlined in the hire contract before committing their signature to the dotted line. Recent research by Which? Holiday has found that many car hire companies are severely lacking in the amount of information they offer up to customers before they hand over the keys. Researchers at Which? Holiday looked at eight car hire companies at Heathrow and Charles de Gaul and came up with some worrying results. When trying to examine the contractual terms and conditions on the websites of both Avis and Enterprise they could find nothing. Limited information was found on the websites of Budget, National and Alamo. A lack of information about the total cost of hiring a car from some of the companies meant that it was not possible to do an accurate price comparison because no information was given about the price of waivers or extra costs.

A spokesperson for Enterprise reportedly told the research team that their website was merely a tool for booking a vehicle and that the transaction as well as terms and conditions being made available would take place at the booking desk. National and Alamo also allegedly said that customers should not compare waivers and insurance cover on price alone because their levels can vary.

Hertz, Europcar and Enterprise all told Which? Holiday that the clause in their contracts making the hirer of a vehicle responsible for paying the full price of that vehicle in the event that they cannot produce the keys after the car has been stolen is a way of preventing fraud and negligence. They said that there were circumstances where exceptions would be made.

South African car hire firms focus on the World Cup

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

With the football World Cup just around the corner managers of car rental companies in South Africa are feeling upbeat about the future. As with everywhere else in the world South African car hire has been feeling the pinch of the global economic downturn. Many companies struggled to remain profitable as business and leisure customers disappeared and many who were denied the capital to maintain their fleets were forced to dramatically increase the rental price on their remaining vehicles just to stay afloat. However the Christmas period showed that customers were finally returning. CEO of car rental at Barloworld, Keith Rankin says that at Avis Rent A Car, owned by Barloworld, the demand for vehicles over the festive period was so high that for a couple of days they actually ran out of cars.

CEO of Europcar South Africa, Dawn Nathan-Jones said that compared to December 2008 tourism figures were up by 12 percent this Christmas. However Christmas is now over and car hire companies in South Africa will be firmly focused on one of the world’s biggest sporting events, the football World Cup. Many say that they intend to increase the size of their fleets to cope with anticipated demand. Nathan-Jones says that enquires and bookings of vehicles at Europcar for the event have shot up over the past few weeks. She says that Europcar could grow their fleet by as much as twenty percent.

The MD of Budget Rent A Car, Ray Booth says that they too intend to grow their fleet before the World Cup and that they too have experienced a surge in bookings over the last couple of weeks.

Online searches for car hire decline in third quarter

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Online searches for car hire related websites steadily declined throughout the year’s third quarter according to reports compiled by one of the U.K.’s leading internet search agencies. Greenlight announced in its Car Hire Sector Report - Q3 2009 that September searches were down 25% on August and 34% on July. Greenlight’s independent report also found that a number of the big players in the car rental sector had slid down the rankings of most searched for on the web by potential customers.

September’s report showed that the three most popular searches by people looking for car hire related sites were: Car hire, which made up 13%, Car rental making up 5% and Car hire UK taking 3%.

The Greenlight study also looked at the visibility of car hire firms on the web in terms of how many times a key word was used in a search and the respective positions they held on page one of Google. The three most visible car hire websites according to the Greenlight team were CarRentals (54%) Travelsupermarket (40%) and Easycar (32%). Falling down the rankings were AnyCarHire and EuropCar who both lost out to the more aggressive marketing tactics of both Hertz and Enterprise. Avis meanwhile stayed in it second quarter position being visible to only 21% of car hire related online searches in September.

Greenlight’s CEO, Warren Cowan said that achieving the top rankings in the car hire sector was incredibly difficult in such an aggressive market like car hire. He pointed out that it was a market where everyone was in direct competition with everybody else.

Europcar goes mobile with new booking system

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Europcar has launched a new web based internet site, making life easier for customers to book rental cars on the go with the use of mobile phones.

The feature can be accessed using any mobile phone which has the ability to connect to the internet, given that a total of 8 million Britons now use the internet on their mobile devices, up 42 percent on last year.

The new implementation provides an easy and quick method for customers wanting to book a vehicle whilst out and about, with people able to book their car at locations where there is no computer access or at the airport.

The service was launched to be user friendly and simple. Once the car hire is confirmed, an SMS would be sent to the mobile phone, reassuring the customer that reservation is authenticated, as a big worry of users of mobile phone transactions is fear that it did not take place.

The website, which is compatible with all mobile phones including Blackberry and iPhones will be available in seven languages including English, French, German, Dutch and Italian.

Europcar, one of Europe’s largest car hire firms, has launched a new online reservation tool for its customers with the help of business partner Accor.

The new system would allow customers to choose from three pre-selected cars once they have finally received confirmation of their hotel booking.   The three pre-selected cars would take into account the location of the hotel, the length of stay, and the country in which the customer is staying.  The new system is aimed at helping the customer find the perfect car for their needs.

Fiat partner with Europcar to go green

Friday, September 25th, 2009

European car hire giant, Europcar, has launched a new competition for residents of France, Italy Portugal, Spain, Germany, Austria and Belgium where participants have the chance to win their very own Fiat 500 vehicle.

The competition is taking place to confirm Europcar’s image as an environmentally friendly company by bringing attention to one of the most environmentally friendly cars on the market today.

Participants can enter the competition by visiting Europcar’s website and answering five questions relating to the environmental benefits of the Fiat 500 and the green benefits of Europcar.

Europcar and Fiat have recently partnered to offer cars with reduced carbon emissions to its customers, with the new vehicle emitting between 110 and 119 grams of carbon dioxide per driven kilometre.

The Fiat 500, which offers the best carbon emissions rate from any model the auto manufacturer has ever made, won the award for European Car of the Year in 2008.

The launch of the green car in Europcar’s fleet has further established the company as a leader in green car hire, with the firm awarded the Green Charter last year by Bureau Veritas.

The car rental company was also awarded the title of World’s Leading Green Transport Solution.

The competition will run from now until October 15 throughout Europe with the winner announced in November.

Used car buyers unknowingly purchase ex-rentals

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

A new report has revealed that several Peugeot drivers were shocked to find out the former owner of their vehicle was a rental company.

Some paid thousands of pounds over the odds after being informed that their car had a previous over, when in fact it was rented to many drivers.

Two British car hire giants have used a “front” and an abbreviated company name in order to disguise the previous owner on the registration documents.

Some customers were told that their vehicles were “fleet” vehicles or owned by manufacturers to later discover that their purchased car was one of over 400,000 ex-rentals sold each year.

An investigation is underway by the Office of Fair Trading into the £35 billion used car market, focussing on dealerships, and is preparing to publish new guidelines on when firms should be reprimanded for misleading buyers.

Experts have warned customers to maintain the attitude of ‘buyers beware’ and demand to know the previous history of the car prior to handing over the money.

One of the most controversial cases involved cars previously leased out by National Car Rental, owned by Europcar, Britain’s largest car hire company which has a fleet of 54,000.

The vehicle registration documents revealed that the name of the previous owner was Provincial Securities Ltd, which did no business.

One car buyer who unknowingly purchased a used rental car from an official dealership said that if he had known about the cars history, he would have been dubious about buying it, given the abuse rental cars get from their drivers.

A Liberal Democrat transport spokesman has described the business as shady and an attempted to get higher prices out of vehicles that have been driven by many people.  He believes that ex-rental cars should be clearly labelled.

On the other hand, he said that the replacement of the 1968 Trade Description Act by new consumer rules last year had caused confusion and needed to be clarified by the office of fair trading.

Europcar apologises to Ruth Kelly

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Former transport secretary Ruth Kelly has received an apology from Europcar after she was incorrectly charged more than £1,000 for problems with her hire car.

Car hire giant Europcar reimbursed Ms Kelly 1,341 euros as well as 47.70 euros for petrol following the incident which occurred when the Labour MP was on holiday with her family in August.

Kelly was billed for almost £1,800 for alleged damage to a seven-seater Volkswagan Touran, which she hired in Avignon, southern France.

Shortly after hiring the car the tyres went flat and phoned Europcar’s assistance line which arranged for a taxi to take them to their destination and for a replacement car.

Ms Kelly was informed that there would be no charge for the service, but upon arriving in London, she was shocked to have discovered a £1,180 invoice.

Kelly, who resigned from Cabinet in September last year, said she was also charged for a tank of fuel despite the car being returned with a full tank.

Ms Kelly sent seven emails to Europcar and contacted them twice over the phone but was not satisfied.

Europcar has since said that the amount for the damage and petrol were made in error and would be refunded.  The company has also waived the rental fee.
