Jet2.com to open new base at East Midlands

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Jet2’s plan to open a new base at East Midlands Airport is likely to create about 250 new jobs from spring next year.

The company will initially base one aircraft at the airport, which will make nine flights per week to seven destinations including Turkey and Egypt.

In what was described as a major coup for the airport, the proposed new base means that an additional 130,000 passengers will travel through the new base.

Jet2 will launch the services from the base with a Boeing 757, and plan further investments as growth increases over the next three years.

Eighty of the planned 250 new jobs will be based at the airport whilst the remainder will be spread across the region.

East Midlands airport’s managing director said: “We have been talking to Jet2 for some time about a base here.

“They have got some great destinations and are a good brand.

“This news is a positive indicator for the future and puts East Midlands Airport in a strong position as we continue to extend and develop our route network.”

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Four Russian tourists who went missing on a dive tour in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt have been found alive, as reported by the state news agency MENA.

The four disappeared off the coast of Marsa Alam, about 800km south of Egyptian capital of Cairo, and is known amongst divers to be one of the world’s top dive sites.

One of the fortunate divers who became separated from the group managed to swim 20 kilometers to shore and alert authorities who began a search and rescue operation for the other three missing divers.

The other three were eventually found and taken to hospital.

The diver who swam to 20 kilometers to shore, Vitaly Ivanov, who was separated from the other three divers overnight after being swept away by strong currents in the shark-infested waters.

The four divers were among a party of six who went diving together, when they become separated and only two divers resurfaced.

The waters around the island are considered to be a top dive location because of the variety of marine life including hammerheads and whitetips, but the area can be dangerous due to the strong currents.

Holidaymakers to sue Thomas Cook

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Travel company Thomas Cook is facing legal action after more than 15 holidaymakers experienced ‘hellish’ trips to Egypt earlier this year.

Those who stayed at the five-star Hauza Beach Hotel in Nabq Bay, Sharm El Sheikh claim that under-cooked food led to them suffering from severe gastric problems.

Legal action has already started against Thomas Cook, Directline Holidays, Lowcostbeds.com and Ramsey travels while investigations are underway against three other companies.

Law firm Irwin Mitchell, representing the holidaymakers, describe the five-star Egyptian hotel as an ‘insect-infested hell-hole’.

British couple David and Judith Harle from County Durham are among those taking legal action after paying over £2,000 for their holiday which left them feeling ill and with severe stomach ailments.

‘My symptoms were so bad and left me so dehydrated that I had to get an injection from the on-site clinic.’ Mr Harle said.

‘We were both then stuck at the hotel, just watching other people falling ill around us.’

A partner at Irwin Mitchel said: ‘We have received enquiries from more than a dozen other holidaymakers who travelled with several different travel companies and whose stories are similar to Mr Harle’s.’

‘We can’t stress enough how important it is for travel companies and hotels to take the health and safety of their guests seriously.

‘We have now started legal action against three different travel companies on behalf of a number our clients and we would urge these companies to accept liability quickly so that our clients can put this ordeal behind them.’

Thomas Cook claims that reports of illness are taken seriously and the matter is being fully investigated by their hotels and resorts team.
