Heathrow’s failure to expand with a third runway is costing the UK about a billion a year according to a recent study by the British chamber of Commerce (BCC).
Heaviest losses are said to be in the North East region which is taking at least a £115 million hit a year from the lack of action on the part of Heathrow. The BCC estimates that completion of the runway would result in a £30 billion countrywide income increase over the next 60 years.
“What’s happening at the moment is that the regional airports are closing their links to Heathrow. The expansion would allow businesses in the North-East and elsewhere to have very much greater access to Heathrow and, therefore, to markets around the world.” commented David Frost, of the BCC.
Regional cities in the UK connecting to Heathrow have declined from 21 to only six at present.
The Economic Impacts of Hub Airports report concluded that the third runway would significantly reduce delays while at the same time increasing frequency of flights. The impact would benefit business travelers by saving them time and increasing their productivity.
The report goes on to say that rival airports in the emerging economies of India, China, and Russia are beginning to surpass Heathrow.
