Porsche added to Avis fleet in Germany

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

The luxury subsidiary of Avis’s car rental service, Prestige Rental Car Services, announced that the firm is now offering the Porsche Panamera available for hire.

The luxury vehicle is currently only available in Germany at the moment, but if demand is high enough, the Porsche Panamera could be available throughout the entire Avis fleet.

The Panamera is larger than most sports cars, being able to accommodate four passengers while most can hold only two.  The Panamera features four doors, a luxury leather interior and a boot.  The mechanical side of the high-end vehicle is all according to Porsche’s specific specifications, with direct injection, PDK, start stop technology and sleep aerodynamics.

The new model Porsche was first revealed in April this year at the Shanghai Automobile Show, and the first car hire company in the world to offer the car.  The Panamera will join the exclusive range of luxury cars already available through Avis, including the new Jaguar XKR 5.0 Cabriolet, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster and the Ferrari F430 F1 Spider.

The starting hire price for the Porsche is €189 for a day or €567 for a weekend, and according to the car hire firm, the Porsche Panamera isn’t too expensive to run as it features brand new technology which helps with fuel efficiency.

Fraudster says he owned a car hire to illegally obtain fuel

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

A fraudster has been able to copy a fuel card to illegally purchase over £3000 worth of petrol at the same petrol station in West Midlands for six days.

Police said the man used a cloned card at the BP Supermart Petrol Station in Willenhall Road, Bilston on at least 40 occasions.

He also scammed money out of drivers in Birmingham by offering them the chance to fill up their tanks with half price fuel, leading a number of drivers to the filling station.

Police detectives say the man was in his late 30s and of Asian appearance.

The Police Chief from the Bilston police station says the man had told attendants working at the petrol station that he ran a car rental company and chose to fill his fleet’s tanks overnight.

He met motorists at Coventry Road in Birmingham and offered them half-price petrol.

The unsuspecting motorists would then follow him to the petrol station where he filled up their car with the copied card and the owners paid half the value for the fuel dispensed.

Police have since issued CCTV photos of the man of heavy build with a black goatee beard.

Association says that ex rentals are a good buy

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

An industry body has claimed that car buyers were not misled and that their purchase was good value after a report had revealed that thousands of motorists had unwittingly purchased ex rental cars from official dealerships.

Many car buyers purchased cars well above the going rate after they were told that the vehicle had only one previous owner, when in fact it was rented to many hundreds of drivers, who often treated the car poorly.

Transport spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, Norman Baker, has called for rules and regulations to be tightened.  He said that his was a shady practise in a bid to get higher prices for used vehicles.

He added by saying that ex-rental cars should be clearly labelled and he would like to see trading standards brought in to test whether the activity could be a breach of consumer rights regulations.

The industry body, the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association has hit back by saying that the cars were well maintained and were a good purchase for motorists.

The association added by saying that the car rental sector was a crucial supplier of good-value nearly new vehicles, and without a yearly supply of 300,000 to 400,000 vehicles, buyers would find it hard to find a competitively priced second-hand cars under a year old.

A spokesman for the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association said that the vehicles are usually maintained on the fleet for six to eight months prior to being sold to a dealer or back to the manufacturer.  Those vehicles would still be covered by manufacturer warranty and would have been better looked after than most privately-owned cars.

A report revealed by the Office of Fair trading has showed that UK’s £35 billion used car market had received 68,000 complaints last year to Consumer Direct in 2008.

It is currently being considered if the legislation for consumer protection is strong enough.

American Airlines expects drop in traffic

Monday, September 21st, 2009

The world’s largest airline, American Airlines, announced late last week that it expects September traffic to drop by 16.4 percent from August, as capacity drops by 9.7 percent.

Carriers generally reduce their schedule after the Labour Day long weekend, and other airlines have been making cuts too.  This year’s autumn schedules have been significantly lighter, as airlines try to match consumer demand.

American says that it expects third quarter unit revenue — revenue divided by capacity — to drop 14.5 percent to 15.5 percent compared with the same period last year.  The whole operation, including regional airlines, is expected to fall 14.3 percent to 15.3 percent.

Meanwhile, American is anticipating costs to rise from August to September, however, not as much as previously expected.  Excluding fuel and special items, the costs are expected to rise from 8.43 cents per available seat mile in August to 9.08 in September.

The airline has said that the increase is due to the reduced capacity, pension costs and the costs from efforts to improve reliability.  The costs would have risen even higher if not for cuts in smaller passenger-related expenses, foreign exchange and other cost-reduction strategies.

Airline financial analyst Hunter Keay wrote in a note that American’s drop in passenger revenue was less sever than competitors, due to the fact that the airline did not expand into new international markets last year where the recession has tightly gripped the air travel industry.

Danish tourism bosses apologise for YouTube campaign

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Denmark’s tourism chiefs have been forced to apologise over a campaign aimed to attract men with the promise that its women are easy.

Marketing bosses uploaded a video to YouTube in which a beautiful blonde woman said she was looking for her child’s father.

The woman claimed her child August was the result of an alcohol-fuelled one-night stand with a stranger in the capital Copenhagen after she showed him the Danish custom of ‘cosiness’.

She then urges the mystery man whose name she can’t remember to make contact with her with photos of the mother and her son on the site.

The clip appeared to be shot on a video camera in the woman’s house and has attracted over a million hits.

However the video has sparked nationwide controversy after it was revealed to be a set-up as a tourism campaign aimed to attract more male travellers to Denmark.

The woman in the video said: “We met one and half years ago when you were on vacation here. We went back to my house and we ended up having sex,” the woman says in the clip.

“The next morning when I woke up, you were gone. I just want to let you know that August is here and he exists. I feel I owe that to both you and him.”

The hoax caused outrage across the country with one newspaper labelling the campaign as grotesque.

Visit Denmark defended its actions by saying that it was a good and sweet story about a mature, responsible woman who lived in a free society and shoulders the responsibilities of her actions.

But the clip, featuring actor Ditte Arnth Jorgensen, was pulled.

Visit Tourism CEO Dorte Kiilerich has since apologised for the film, saying that it certainly wasn’t the idea.
