Dive tourism in Australia affected by headlines

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Queensland dive operators blame news headlines for killing the local industry.

Although tourism is generally down, due to the effects of the global economic crisis, dive operators in the region say that the odds are stacked against them. Tourism numbers have declined by 30 percent in a year.

Already hurting due to the economic downturn and rising fuel costs, worldwide publicity surrounding fatalities has continued to punish the dive industry.

Loosely bsed on the disappearance of divers Thomas and Eileen Lonergan in the Great Barrier Reef, the film ‘Open Water’ reopened old wounds in 2003.

Since then, a woman was left to drown by her husband whilst diving on the reef, and in May last year Briton Dick Neely and American Alison Dalton made headlines around the world as they became separated from their Great Barrier Reef dive charter.

The couple were found alive in shark-infested waters off the coast 19 hours after being reported missing.

Dive tour operate Monique Matthews of Undersea Explorer, which folded in the last two months said sensational media coverage had a devastating effect on small industry players.

“As it does on so many things the media sensationalises these things to the point of no return… for us anyway,” Ms Matthews said.

The company, which folded last year, catered mainly for small tour groups and couples, folded last year under the weight of increasing overhead expenses.  The bad press was the straw that broke the camel’s back, Ms. Matthews said.

“We can’t fight the huge media machine,” she said.

“The Lonergans disappeared more than a decade ago and people still talk about it.”

The industry is also incensed at media coverage of those who die of underlying medical conditions whilst diving, which can leave dive operators struggling to convince tourists that scuba diving is safe.

Col McKenzie, general manager of the Queensland Tourism Association said the media was too quick to brand fatal incidents as ‘dive deaths’.

“You can come to Australia and Australia will give you world-quality diving which is very, very safe, but we can’t guarantee you won’t suffer a heart attack,” Mr McKenzie said.

The Maritime Union of Australia has said there have been two deaths involving divers in the Great Barrier Reef over the past 12 months.

Tall ships boost Belfast’s economy

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Belfast Lord Mayor Naomi Long said the Tall Ships event could boost local economy by up to £10 million.

The even is expected to bring thousands of visitors to Belfast for the four-day event which begins with the arrival of the 40-strong fleet on Thursday.

The festival will take place in the docks area and will include free activities, fireworks, continental markets, funfairs and concerts.

It is estimated that income could support about 550 jobs in the tourism sector.

Councillor Long said economists estimated that every £1 million of tourism expenditure supported 55 jobs.

“This will be the biggest event that Belfast has ever hosted and the single biggest event on this island this year,” she said.

“We will have visitors from all over the world and they will enjoy the warmth and hospitality for which Belfast people are renowned.”

Belfast City Council has had a long ambition to bring the tall ships back to the city following the previous event proved highly successful.

“The council has taken the decision to invest heavily in the event because we are aware of the benefits the Tall Ships can bring in terms of revenue. I confidently believe that the city’s economy could be boosted to the tune of £10 million”, Councillor Long added.

“Hundreds of thousands of people will visit the city during the four days. Many will be staying over in our hotels and guest houses, eating in the restaurants and I am sure many will take the opportunity to shop in the city when they are here.”

The Belfast City Council is the biggest contributor of funds for the event, giving a total of £1.1 million towards a total cost of £2.4 million.

Court orders Dubai car rental company to return passport

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

A man who allegedly incurred over $1000 in traffic violations in Dubai has finally had his passport returned to him from a car hire company.

A court has ruled in favour of businessman deeming the passport as personal property and a necessary means of identification.

The 45-year-old Ibrahim Ahmed claimed the car hire company would not give back his passport after he allegedly accumulated over $1000 in fines while renting a car in Dubai from June 2008 until May this year.

Ahmed refused to pay the fees for the rental car but did not pay the fines that he incurred on the vehicle, as he did not believe he committed any traffic offences whilst driving the vehicle.  This led to the rental car company withholding the passport.

Car rental companies commonly keep customer’s passports as a bond, as it is believed that a credit card number could be easily cancelled.

Two court hearings followed, which both ruled in favour of Mr Ahmed, with Muraqqabat police ordered to obtain the passport from the car hire company and return it to the man.

Southwest follows with bid on Frontier Airlines

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Southwest Airlines has put forward a bit to take over the struggling Frontier Airlines, following a bid by regional carrier Republic Airlines.

Denver based carrier Frontier Airlines has routes to 50 cities in the US, Mexico and Costa Rica, placing them in direct competition of major airlines such as United and Southwest airlines.

Taking over Frontier would add to Southwest’s destinations and remove one of its major competitors in the airlines hub city of Denver, Colorado.   Southwest presently have 36 percent of the Denver market whilst United around 37 percent.

“This provides us a great way to grow substantially in a city that is very important to us,” said Bob Jordan, Southwest spokesman.

If the initial Republic Airways takeover bit is successful, it would bring the regional airline up to the same level as some of America’s largest airlines and could potentially win passengers over who are fed up with the big-name carriers.

Southwest vows to keep all of Frontier’s routes, including flights Atlanta which Southwest does not currently service,  Southwest would also phase out Frontier’s Airbus fleet and replace in favour of Boeing 737s.  The takeover would also include Frontier’s regional carrier Lynx.

A Republic Airways spokesman has defended the airlines bid for Frontier, saying that the two bids aren’t as far apart as it appears, based on expenses like aircraft lease rejections.

However financial analysts with Jesup & Lamont Securities say that it is quite unlikely that Republic Airways could match the bid made by Southwest.

“I seriously doubt they have the capital to do that,” she said. “This is an all-cash bid. Southwest is going to write a check.”

Steve Snyder, Frontier spokesman, said the carrier wouldn’t have any comment until it finishes reviewing Southwest’s bid.

Denver based Frontier airlines have been operating under bankruptcy since April last year.

Lebanon sees 1 million tourists in July

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Lebanon has seen a record number of tourists in the month of July, the tourism ministry reported on Tuesday.

“It’s enormous, we have never seen this before,” ministry director Nada Sardouk said.

At the end of the month, tourist figures totalled 1,007,352, she said, including some 325,000 Lebanese expats and just as many Syrians.

Visitors have mostly come from Saudi Arabia, and have been visiting in droves, and reservations for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan are also looking strong, the tourism ministry reports.

However an increasing number of Europeans are visiting Lebanon, with 79,000 arrivals recorded in July from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

The tourism ministry hopes to have hosted over two million tourists by the end of 2009 which is equivalent to about half the country’s population.

Lebanese tourism has struggled in recent years due to ongoing conflicts with Israel and a string of political assassinations following the Beirut bombing which killed former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri in 2005.

Two years ago, Israel and Lebanon’s Shi’ite militia Hezbollah fought a summer war, and last year the army fought with al-Qaeda Islamists in a Palestinian refugee camp.

Tourism to the nation made a speedy recovery in 2008 with a total of 1.3 million arrivals, in a country that was once called the ‘Switzerland of the Middle East’.

Europcar to give customers £10 back

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

One of the UK’s main players in the car hire industry, Europcar, is offering discounts to customer in a bid to encourage customers to hire a car.

The moves follow a financial downturn in the car rental industry, with almost all firms reporting losses due to the downturn in travel spending and the current recession.

Europcar, is beginning to offer a £10 voucher if the customer brings back a car with at least a quarter of a tank of fuel, and begun offering the purchase of a full tank of fuel at 5p below the average street pump price.

“Customers have told us they like the option of buying fuel up front as it saves them the hassle of re-fuelling the vehicle at the end of the hire and also means they receive a good rate at a time when fuel costs are rising again”, said Catriona Lougher, Marketing Director of car hire firm Europcar.

Customers sometimes express dissatisfaction about not using as much petrol as anticipated, meaning that it can sometimes be difficult in calculating the remaining fuel, so Europcar will give a £10 voucher towards their next car hire.

Car hire companies worldwide have begun introducing new initiatives to curb the effect of the financial crisis.  Last week Europcar began a campaign on Twitter, offering car hire information and destination advice.

Holidaymakers to sue Thomas Cook

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Travel company Thomas Cook is facing legal action after more than 15 holidaymakers experienced ‘hellish’ trips to Egypt earlier this year.

Those who stayed at the five-star Hauza Beach Hotel in Nabq Bay, Sharm El Sheikh claim that under-cooked food led to them suffering from severe gastric problems.

Legal action has already started against Thomas Cook, Directline Holidays, Lowcostbeds.com and Ramsey travels while investigations are underway against three other companies.

Law firm Irwin Mitchell, representing the holidaymakers, describe the five-star Egyptian hotel as an ‘insect-infested hell-hole’.

British couple David and Judith Harle from County Durham are among those taking legal action after paying over £2,000 for their holiday which left them feeling ill and with severe stomach ailments.

‘My symptoms were so bad and left me so dehydrated that I had to get an injection from the on-site clinic.’ Mr Harle said.

‘We were both then stuck at the hotel, just watching other people falling ill around us.’

A partner at Irwin Mitchel said: ‘We have received enquiries from more than a dozen other holidaymakers who travelled with several different travel companies and whose stories are similar to Mr Harle’s.’

‘We can’t stress enough how important it is for travel companies and hotels to take the health and safety of their guests seriously.

‘We have now started legal action against three different travel companies on behalf of a number our clients and we would urge these companies to accept liability quickly so that our clients can put this ordeal behind them.’

Thomas Cook claims that reports of illness are taken seriously and the matter is being fully investigated by their hotels and resorts team.

World’s largest hotel group predicts slow recovery

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

The world’s biggest hotel group, Intercontinental Hotels, has reported that it has seen virtually no sign of recovery, and it could take years for trade to return to the levels it once was.

The group, which operates both the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn brands, said that the recession was continuing to have an effect on travel budgets.

Operating profits fell 38% to $179 million in the first half of this year.

The group said that while occupancy levels were evening out, room prices were under pressure.

“We can’t see any sign of recovery and it could be two years before we get back to levels of travel we were at before,” said chief executive Andrew Cosslett.

“This is one of the toughest years on record with little respite and it will continue to be challenging this year and into next.”

The group added that while reservations for July had benefited from improved demand from leisure travellers, it could not predict future booking trends.

The Intercontinental group has 4,300 properties worldwide consisting of over 630,000 rooms.

Ryanair set to build base in Yorkshire

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Ryanair have announced that they will open a new base in Yorkshire in March next year that will lead to the creation of about 1,000 jobs.

The company will offer 14 new routes and 63 weekly flights to and from Leeds Bradford, investing more than $84 million in the airport.

The airline will base two aircraft at Leeds Bradford, which will become the airline’s 34th base.

The new routes will bring Ryanair’s number of destinations from Leeds Bradford to 17.

Ryanair hopes that the new flights will boost the number of passengers passing through the airport each year to over a million.

Leeds Bradford chief executive said: “This is a great vote of confidence in the potential of both the airport and our region from Europe’s largest airline.

“Today’s announcement makes us an exception in the sector and will help create much-needed jobs.

“It shows Ryanair shares our confidence in the tremendous opportunity for strong market growth.”

Ryanair boss Mr O’Leary added: “Ryanair is delighted to announce Leeds Bradford as our 34th base and our 11th UK base airport.

“Ryanair’s one million passengers will create and sustain 1,000 jobs locally at Leeds Bradford Airport.”

Travellers warned of car hire shortage in Spain

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Holidaymakers heading to Spain could find themselves in difficulty hiring cars due to a nationwide shortage of vehicles.

Car hire companies are warning that unless travellers’ pre-book cars it is unlikely they would be able to rent one, especially in popular destinations such as Malaga airport.

The vehicle shortage may not only cause the hassle of leaving travellers without transport, but also boost the cost at a time when tourists are price-conscious.

Spain, usually renowned for its cheap car rental prices, is currently suffering as the credit crunch has affected the car hire companies’ ability to buy and lease cars from manufacturers.

Lack of available credit means car rental companies do not have the money to lease or buy enough vehicles to cover the high tourist season.

Cutbacks in fleets have been made as forecasts were based on an 18% drop in tourist numbers over the winter season, but tempting offers and poor weather in the UK have led to a sharp increase in last-minute holidays to Spain, pushing the demand for cars.

Head of marketing and e-commerce for Budget Rent-a-Car, Andy Lewis said:  ‘It is true that rental vehicles in Spain are generally in short supply across the industry this summer. We therefore highly recommend that rental bookings are made well in advance of travel to avoid disappointment.’
