Last weekend’s earthquake in Chile killed 700 people. All forms of communications were down though electricity, phone lines and public transportation had been restored in Santiago, which is situated about 200 miles to the northeast of the central Chilean city of Concepcion. Damage control was also carried out in the port city of Valparaiso that is an hour and a half drive away from Santiago. Conversely, Princess Cruises decided to dock there as planned though they stated that their passengers would be kept on board the ship for safety measures.
A representative for Turismo Chile said that the airport in the Santiago, wishes to reopen to commercial flights this week despite damage to the customs and emigration area amongst other terminal facilities. LAN Airlines, the country’s biggest carrier, resumed 15% of its international and domestic flights in a temporary terminal last Tuesday.
Another representative for Turismo Chile alleged that the infrastructure is okay though people have issues with coming and going. The United States is advising their citizens to avoid unnecessary trips to Chile. Tourism officials of Chile said that notwithstanding last Saturday’s 8.8-magnitude earthquake, many of the country’s key tourist attractions remain unharmed like Patagonia, The Atacama Desert and Easter Island.
While Chile asserts that now is still a fine time to visit. Populace says that if travelers were hoping to go to Chile for a break it would be preeminent to postpone it for some time and holidaymakers may not get their money worth.
