Man behind Top Gear’s The Stig to publish autobiography

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

A new autobiography, in which it is claimed that former Formula Three racing driver, Ben Collins, is Top Gear’s The Stig; is to be published following a ruling by the High Court. The BBC, maker of the popular motoring show, has been trying to seek an injunction claiming Mr Collins is breaking confidentiality agreements by revealing his identity.

The BBC also argued that the identity of The Stig, being an integral part of the make up of the show, was the property of those who paid the BBC’s licence fee. Because most viewers’ enjoyed the mystery behind the man in white, his identity should remain a secret, the BBC went onto argue.

Last month, 33-year-old Collins was linked to the show through the financial records of his company. However, the BBC claimed that the records were to do with drivers’ supplied by Mr Collins for events such as Top Gear Live. The BBC has refused to confirm or deny that Mr Collins has been The Stig for the last seven years.

It has been alleged that Mr Collins wanted to reveal himself so that he could have the chance to participate in the lucrative product sponsorship and book deals which fellow presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond have the opportunity of exploiting.

Andy Wilman, Top Gear’s executive producer, said he believed that BBC had every right to make sure the identity of The Stig was kept secret from those whose only intention was to use it for money making purposes.

BBC could take legal action if The Stig unmasks himself

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Known only to a handful of people, the true identity of one of motoring’s most illusive personalities could soon become known to all, as The Stig prepares to publish his autobiography. Top Gear’s stunt driver has reportedly already written a draft of his memoirs and also found a publisher.

If he does decide to go ahead and reveal himself, The Stig could find himself in a legal battle with the BBC. He is contractually forbidden from telling anyone who he really is, including the celebrities he trains to take part in the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car section of the show.

Lawyers say that although the BBC would have a case against The Stig based on clauses of his contract, he would also have a strong case based on basic human rights. Head of media law at the firm Taylor Wessing, Niri Shan, said article 10 of the Human Rights Act gave The Stig the right to free speech.

According to sources, The Stig is not happy about the fact that the other presenters on the show are able to make lucrative publishing deals, as well as endorse products, because they are so well known with the public. Top Gear is currently one of the most popular television shows around the world.

The identity of The Stig is a much mooted subject. Racing personalities such as former Formula One champion Damon Hill and former Formula Three driver Ben Collins have been touted as possible candidates. Last year Michael Schumacher was unmasked as The Stig on the show, but it was later confirmed that it was just a hoax.

Andy Murray prepares for Centre Court showdown

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Andy Murray has admitted that he is pleased his supporters have been able to move on from the disappointment of the World Cup and get behind him at Wimbledon. He added that it makes a huge difference to the pressure of the tournament when one knows that the home support is there for you.

Murray faces Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Centre Court this afternoon. The only hope of British sporting glory this summer, Murray is bound to be feeling some pressure. However, he is still to drop a set in this tournament, and seems genuinely relaxed.

Murray has been staying at his Surrey home throughout the championships. He said that it made him feel more comfortable to be in his own home surrounded by family and friends. He explained that on the court it made little difference, but to be off the court with those you know well around you is nice. He explained that it was difficult to get that during the rest of the year.

The forecast for Wimbledon today is for some light drizzle early on followed by another fabulously warm day with temperatures expected to hit around 27C.

In the audience, cheering him on with the rest of the supporters today will be Murray’s mother Judy and Kim Sears, his girlfriend. David Beckham also appears to be trying to put the country’s dismal performance in South Africa behind him. The former England football captain has apparently sent a good luck message to the Scot ahead of today’s clash via text message.

Beckham seen using mobile phone while driving

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Football great David Beckham has been spotted texting while driving, after paparazzi photographed him in his car.

The star was seen in his Cadillac Escalade using his mobile phone on his way back home to his US home after training with LA Galaxy teammates.

Beckham was photographed with one hand on the wheel, and the device in his other hand which is highly illegally in California, as it is in the UK.

It was reported that this was not the first time that the 34 year old has committed driving offences, with last year been given a fine for making an illegal manoeuvre while driving in the US.

Drivers may also want to avoid the example by child star Freddie Highmore, after it was revealed that the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory actor shouted at a pedestrian during his driving test.
