Plenty of rental cars still available in Madrid, Barcelona

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Despite widespread media coverage of car hire shortages affecting Spain, Madrid and Barcelona are still revealing strong numbers of bookings.

Although there has been a 10% drop in tourists to the Iberian Peninsula and car hire shortages in popular resort areas, the two major cities and Alicante have reported strong forecasts for the immediate future.

The financial crisis and lack of consumer spending power has resulted in a stronger position for internet search and compare sites to find their best car hire options.

As June saw supply fall short of demand across the country, with many customers left stranded without car hire, the following months paint a brighter picture for Spanish car hire companies.  The prior months had seen the tourist industry cut back on resources and car hire firms adjusting their capacity to cope with the anticipated decline in holidaymakers.

Travellers, however, are being much more careful when choosing their car hire, with many opting to use comparative sites to select their rental vehicle.

Car hire in Barcelona and Madrid are currently still available despite the number of tourists, as local operators expect positive results by the end of the summer tourist season.

Zipcar doing well despite recession

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Car rental/sharing company Zipcar has performed well this year in spite of the worldwide recession.

Zipcar has forecasted a windfall this year, predicting revenue of around $130 million across its 13 worldwide locations.

The company is planning to open up two more outlets in London next year, as well as in Vancouver, and predicts to be the ‘future of car rentals’.

Zipcar says that the business could become a ‘$12.5 billion car rental by the hour’ industry and predict a rise of between 15 and 25 percent business in the next five years as consumer trends lean towards better value car hire.

The company boasts more than 300,000 members, and is not the only company to have introduced car sharing and rental by the hour, with many other companies begin to see the benefits and the demand for cheaper and more environmentally friendly options.

Car sharing initiatives are easy to use, by initially becoming a member at a cost of $50 per year.  Once a member, a swipe card is issued that can be used to open the car or start the engine, and an hourly charge of $5 to $20 is charged depending on the car and company used.  Insurance is included, but there is a limit on mileage.

British Airways turns 90 years old

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

British Airways turned 90 years old yesterday with Kirsty Gallacher modelling a vintage BA cabin crew uniform.

In the lead up to the anniversary week, TV presenter Kirsty joined members of the cabin crew to model the uniforms for customers in T5.

Other vintage BA memorabilia has been showcased and a Swarovski jewelled Union Jack was lent to the new terminal to celebrate.

Britain’s national carrier first launched services from London to Paris on August 25, 1919, which cost 42 guineas.

The airline has made history over the years, having transported the likes of Neville Chamberlain to meet with Hitler in 1938, when he declared they had negotiated peace.

Three years later in 1942, Winston Churchill flew with British Airways on the first transatlantic flight made by a Prime Minister.

The airline has tried to spruce up its image over the years, with help from designers such as Anya Hindmarch and Sir Terence Conran, as well as top fashionistas Paul Costelloe and Julien Macdonald to design uniforms for cabin crew.

Tributes to the airline today were led by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

‘Ninety years on, the world’s most iconic airline is still proudly flying the flag and remains a great British brand. Many congratulations to its entire staff – past and present, on this special day’ he said.

‘Over the past nine decades, British Airways has played its part in many historic episodes,’ added British Airways chairman Martin Broughton.

‘We have a rich history supporting Britain and will carry this forward to our centenary and beyond.’

Americans threaten to boycott Scotland

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

A campaign has been launched by furious American’s calling for tourists to boycott Scotland over the release for the release of the Lockerbie bomber.

US website boycotscotland.com has strongly urged Americans not to travel to the UK or purchase goods from Scotland.

“Unless the Scottish Government rescinds this decision to release al-Megrahi, we urge all Americans to protest this action by boycotting the United Kingdom and Scotland in full,” the website says.

“Don’t travel to Scotland or do business there, and don’t buy British or Scottish products.”

“They need a reminder, and protesting by boycotting travel and business with Scotland and the United Kingdom is the best way of doing so,” the website says.

A heated debate between Americans and Scots has erupted on Facebook and Twitter. .

“Due to the cowardly decision taken by the Scottish government to release the Lockerbie bomber I am asking that as many people as possible join this group and let the Scottish government know how we feel, by boycotting Scotland (if we visit, no money spent there),” says Facebook group Boycott Scotland, Scottish Companies and Scottish Goods.

CaptPat48 joined the debate on Twitter, saying: “Boycott Scotland over Lockerbie Bomber release! Don’t buy their products either!”

Luton could lose EasyJet

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

In further changes in the airline industry over landing fees, EasyJet could leave Luton Airport and move their hub elsewhere.

The low-cost carrier calls Luton its ‘Spiritual Home’, but is understood to be refusing to pay higher landing charges planned by the airport.

If an agreement couldn’t be reached the carrier would possibly move its aircraft to London Stansted or Gatwick airports.

The negotiations follow Ryanair’s decision to axe 90 percent of flights from Manchester airport over high airport fees.

The difficult climate and competition within the market is said to be the cause of many airlines attempting to cut as many costs as possible, with many regional British airports losing out.  This could lead to passengers with less choice of budget airports from their nearest airport.

Britain could also lose airlines to European destinations which have scrapped tourist taxes or reduced airport charges.

Sources close to EasyJet say that airport fees already make up 10 percent of the fair from Luton, and the proposed fare increase would mean the airline has to raise ticket prices.

EasyJet spokesman Andrew McConnell said: “Talks are still continuing between EasyJet and the airport about airport costs and the future growth strategy, which would allow us to invest at the airport to create much needed jobs.”

A Luton Airport spokesperson said: “Luton Airport maintains a constant dialogue with all of the airlines that operate from the airport over contracts, new routes and growth and our established practice is to conduct these sensitive commercial negotiations in private.”

Edinburgh puts brakes on car hire company

Friday, August 21st, 2009

A move by a private hire car company to offer cheaper fares was blocked after it was denied permission to adjust its meters.

Edinburgh City Private Hire had asked the council permission to reduce the tariff on the meters by 30 percent.

The decision has been postponed following objections from the city’s black cab firms until it can be discussed by the Hire Car Consultation Group.

City Cabs and Central Taxis are opposed to the change, claiming that it could lead to vast problems for the industry if private hire cars offer a competitive advantage.

Edinburgh City Private Hire director, Kevin Woodburn was frustrated by the move, saying that the council was “making it impossible” to offer customers a discount.  Mr Woodburn said the company was seeking legal advice as to whether the council has the right to prevent it from altering the meters.

“We wanted to bring in a change to the meter so that our customers could see the discount,” he said. “Our drivers can already work out a discount, but this is time- consuming and open to problems.

“I am really concerned that the council has not allowed us to do this so it can refer the matter to the public hire companies, as it has nothing to do with them.”

Chairman of Central Taxis, Bill Purnell, insisted that his company nor city cabs had any problems with the company offering lower fairs, but said there were wider implications and that other options are available.

“We are not objecting to discounted fares,” he said. “What we are concerned about is altering the meter fare. Customers are used to meters and they trust them, but if these changes are brought in it will allow different fares to be set on meters by different private hire drivers, so you could have 400 different fares.

“That could lead to confusion and so there would be less trust in the meters. My concern is that people on a Friday or Saturday night who get charged different fares could become agitated.”

Ryanair to launch 8 new routes

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Ryanair, Europe’s largest budget carrier, has announced the launch eight new services, bringing the total to 27 flights from Edinburgh, up from 19 at the same time last year.

The airline will be focussing its efforts on routes popular in winter like Barcelona, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife, as well as city break locations such as Brussels, Munich, Gdansk and Oslo.

Ryanair hope to increase passenger numbers up to 2 million at Edinburgh airport and sustain 2,000 local jobs.

The services will open from October until March 2010.

Ryanair’s announcement comes just days after the airline had decided to cull many of it’s Manchester routes in a dispute over airport charges.

Managing director of Edinburgh Airport, Gordon Dewar, said: “We are delighted that Ryanair have once again committed to expanding their operation out of Edinburgh Airport, now the fastest growing airport anywhere in the UK.

“These are exciting new destinations, which will give our increasing numbers of passengers an even greater choice of places to jet off to this winter.

“We are particularly pleased to see new routes to Germany, Spain and Norway, key tourism markets for Scotland, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period.”

Lucky escape for missing divers

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Four Russian tourists who went missing on a dive tour in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt have been found alive, as reported by the state news agency MENA.

The four disappeared off the coast of Marsa Alam, about 800km south of Egyptian capital of Cairo, and is known amongst divers to be one of the world’s top dive sites.

One of the fortunate divers who became separated from the group managed to swim 20 kilometers to shore and alert authorities who began a search and rescue operation for the other three missing divers.

The other three were eventually found and taken to hospital.

The diver who swam to 20 kilometers to shore, Vitaly Ivanov, who was separated from the other three divers overnight after being swept away by strong currents in the shark-infested waters.

The four divers were among a party of six who went diving together, when they become separated and only two divers resurfaced.

The waters around the island are considered to be a top dive location because of the variety of marine life including hammerheads and whitetips, but the area can be dangerous due to the strong currents.

Hertz to upgrade technology to improve customer relations

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Hertz, one of the world’s largest car hire companies, plans to introduce new high-resolution cameras that can take pictures before and after a car is hired.

The company has been testing new technology at a secret location in the US which can record close up images from multiple angles which can show every scratch and dent on the surface of a car.

The new technology is intended to improve customer relations and reduce losses due to damage, and comes at a pivotal time for the car hire industry which has been struggling due to the effects of the recession, but is now seeing signs of recovery.

Hertz spokesman, Richard Broome, said the company hopes the new high resolution digital inspections would help reduce annual damage payments of £102 million.

The long standing procedure for inspecting vehicles includes a walk around with the customer and a company representative to visually inspect the damage.   The new system will mean the close up photos will show any damage that the customer may be responsible for.

“It will speed up the rental process and help to avoid any disputes over damage. Sometimes we may get into disputes with consumers that don’t get resolved” Mr Broome said.

The plan to introduce the new technology is part of a wider plan by Hertz to expand its market base by appealing to new customers.  On Monday, Hertz revealed it had purchased Automoti Group, a website that allows car hunters to rent the vehicle before buying it.  Hertz has also introduced a per-hour car hire scheme in London, Paris and New York.

The car rental business has been struggling for the past 18 months as competition has forced prices to crash, along with the credit crisis which has meant car hire chains have faced extra difficulties when gaining credit to upgrade their fleets.

Hertz recorded a profit in the second quarter of this year, citing rising costs as the reason to their rebound.

Europcar to show green ratings

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

UK car rental giant, Europcar, will now provide “green” minded customers the opportunity to research  their rental car’s emission ratings by visiting a new feature on the company’s website.

The website feature will allow customers to find out information such as vehicle emission ratings and fuel efficiency, as petrol prices climb and driving across the UK becomes more expensive.

The website says economy sized three door hatchbacks are the most economical cars to hire, and more likely to have the lowest emissions ratings with an estimate of 130 grams. Models available include the Ford Ka, which is a fuel efficient, ‘green’ option when renting a car, whereas larger, more expensive models available for hire such as Volvo and Saab have a higher carbon emissions rating and also receive less mileage on fuel efficiency.

Catriona Lougher, marketing director for Europcar said: “With cost cutting at the top of the Agenda for many UK households and businesses, using cars that are more fuel efficient has got to be a key priority. This initiative is in keeping with Europcar’s Environmental Charter and means our customers can make more informed choices about the vehicles they rent and, as a result, help them reduce fuel consumption and contribute to an overall reduction in CO2 emissions.”
