One place not to be missed in Sicily is Mount Etna, which in the winter months has substantial snowfall allowing for great skiing conditions. The mountain is located in the east of the island near to Catania. With a cheap hire car in Sicily you can easily make your way to the top of the mountain, stopping off at small villages along the way.
